I picked up the spoon from the center of my oat sludge and held it above the bowl. The slop slowly slid down the utensil and fell back to the dish to melt into the rest. Even if my stomach hadn’t been a nauseous mess, I couldn’t have eaten the so-called breakfast in front of me.

“This is not oatmeal. I don’t know what it is, but it isn’t edible,” I said to Cayde.

He laughed. “It could be worse.”

Eric scoffed. “I suppose it isn’t rocks. Rocks might be worse.” He crinkled his nose and pushed his bowl away.

I shoved mine all the way to the center of the table. On any other day, a meal this gross would have wrecked my mood. In this case, I was just thankful to have an excuse to not eat. Cayde had woken up with a light in his autumn eyes that I hadn’t seen in days. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that my good day yesterday had apparently been a fluke.

“I’m glad Bunny is somewhere safe, but Crowley won’t have to attack us at this rate. We’ll just die of starvation.”

Cayde rolled his eyes, but smirked adorably. “You guys are so dramatic!” I grimaced for him as he took a big bite.

I noticed Eric’s attention in his lap, his hands fiddling with the bandage on his thigh again. “Leave it alone, Eric.”

“She wrapped it too tight!”

“Can’t even trust her to wrap a wound right,” Cayde mumbled.

“I think you’ll live,” I said.

Eric pulled his flask out of his pocket and poured a generous amount of clear liquor into his coffee mug. “Well, if I don’t get to hit something soon, I’m not sure you guys will.”

“Cayde’s right; you are dramatic.”

They both smiled.

As I reached for my coffee, a spasm shook my hand. I quickly pulled away from my mug to keep from knocking it over. My eyes shot to Cayde to make sure he hadn’t seen it happen, but of course he and Eric both had. Neither said anything though. Cayde just rested his hand on my thigh, and Eric took another gulp of his strong coffee.

Markham strode through the cafeteria door, headed straight for our table. He always walked with purpose, but there was a specific urgency in his step.

“Something happened,” I said.

Cayde looked up from his gruel to see what I meant, and Eric turned around to follow our eyes.

“Cayde, come with me. Quickly,” Markham said. He turned and walked away with the same purpose, not waiting for Cayde to follow.

When Cayde stood, I jumped out of my seat. “I’m going too!”

“I assumed,” he said.

Eric pushed himself out of his chair too, favoring his hurt leg. “Well, me too then!” He was getting around surprisingly well, even though he’d already abandoned the crutches.

“Whatever,” Cayde said, heading for the door.

Eric and I got a few paces away from the table before we realized we’d left our mugs and rushed back to chug our drinks. The hot coffee hit my throat weirdly, thanks to a particularly large gulp, and I ended up in a coughing fit.
